POST & UNIT MEETINGS
September 7 and October 5 are the dates to remember. Our September meeting is a joint meeting for the purpose of receiving reports from Boy and Girl State attendees. Come on out and support our youth. This is an excellent opportunity to invite potential members so that they get a feel for our dedication to our young people.

Dinner is served at 7:15 PM and the cost is only $5.00 per person. That includes tea and desert. Our meetings start at 8:00 PM.

SHRIMP FEAST
The 19th annual Shrimp Feast, sponsored by SAL Squadron 40, will be Saturday, September 11 beginning at 5:00 PM. The cost for “all you can eat” is $25.00 advance and $30.00 at the gate and that includes your soft drink and beer. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 PM. Dyversity will provide the music from 6 to 9 PM. Profits from the Shrimp Feast help support the 2 American Legion Baseball teams sponsored by Post 40. Get you tickets and come on out for a fun time and support American Legion Baseball.

CHOWAN COUNTY REGIONAL FAIR
Fair dates, in case you have not seen a banner, is September 28 through October 2. Set-up will begin Monday, September 20. Exhibit entry is Saturday and Sunday afternoon, September 25 & 26. Clean-up starts late Sunday morning, October 3 and continues each day until complete. Help is always welcomed. The more that show up the quicker it gets done.

If you get the chance encourage people to get their tickets in advance and save $3.00 per ticket. Ticket prices are $15.00 in advance and $18.00 at the gate. They can order on line by clicking here, order by mail at CCRF, P.O. Box 390, Edenton, NC 27932 and starting at the end of August can go to any Colony Tire Store. In fact, advance tickets are on sale year round except for the actual week of the fair. The best way for people to know this is word of mouth, so please spread the word. That way people can prepare for the fair without spending a lot of money at one time by buying one or two tickets at the time.

You will hear, “I don’t ride amusement rides so why should I have to pay full price?” Rides are just one part of the fair. There is all the stage entertainment that in another setting will cost as much or more than the ticket cost. There are the exhibits for which prizes money is paid out that are free viewing. Parking is free but a sizable donation is made to the groups parking the cars and providing tram service. This year there will be Fantazia Circus, The Mitchell Marionettes, Pickles Da Clown, E~Z Ride & Lou’s Zoo and more providing trills and chills, all free. On Wednesday morning we provide a free outing for K thru 3rd grade students to visit the fair. And, for those young at heart that want to ride, they can. Then there is the meeting of old friends that you have not seen since last year’s fair. And, if you don’t believe it’s the best deal around for the buck, you need to visit other fairs, festivals, concerts and expositions.

EMERGENCY SERVICES APPRECIATION BANQUET
The 40th Annual Chowan County Emergency Services Appreciation Banquet will be Thursday, October 28, 2010. The guest speaker will be Reuben Young, NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary. There will be a social beginning at 5:30 PM and the banquet start at 7:00 PM. Ticket cost remains at $10.00 per person and this is only because of the many businesses that support this community service program to show appreciation for our fellow citizens who do so much for us. Tickets will be on sale in late September. There will be a need for a lot of volunteers that afternoon and evening.

FALL CONFERENCE
The Department Fall Conference will be October14 – 17 (meetings are 15 & 16) at the North Raleigh Hilton in Raleigh. Room rates are $85.00 per night plus taxes. For reservations call 800-445-8667 and be sure to tell them you are with The American Legion. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Legion and its programs.

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION
Male descendants of Legion members or of deceased veterans who were members or eligible to be members are eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion. SAL Squadron 40 is very active and supportive of Post 40 activities. Commander Ascher is implementing new ideas and challenges to more involve the SAL in Legion programs. Encourage your sons and grandsons to join the SAL. Annual dues are $15.00 for 21 and over and $7.50 for 20 and under.

BINGO
Attendance at bingo has been down this summer but hopefully will pick back up soon. In any event, help is needed. Service to our bingo patrons is important. By volunteering one Monday night a month you will be greatly appreciated.

COOK COMMITTEE
The cook team can always use extra help. Cleanup is always the challenge. ON meeting nights we have members in the kitchen while the meeting is ongoing. That’s not right. All members should be at the meeting.

AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM
The 1st annual NE NC Equine and Tractor Expo held on August 7 to raise funds for an Agriculture Museum building was a success in that it made a small profit and the few people that came out seemed to enjoy looking at the antique tractors and watching the young people perform on horse back. We just have to figure a way to entice local people, including our own membership, to support our efforts.

MEMBERSHIP
The 2011 membership year is ¼ over and we still have almost 200 members who have not renewed their membership. A second notice will soon be in your mail boxes. If you have paid and receive the notice it is because of the time it takes for your membership to be processed by the Post, then Department to get it to National. If you have not paid please do so today. Let’s get membership behind us and move on to programs that support our veterans in need and the youth of our communities.

CLUBROOM
Your clubroom is a place to relax and make and renew old friendships. If you haven’t been out lately you should try it. It is open from 3 PM to approximately 8 PM Monday thru Friday. You can call 482-2097 to check for on going or planned activities.

LEGION RIDERS
The Post 40 American Legion Riders are growing, not only in numbers, but in support of Legion programs. If you have a motorcycle or plan to get one and want to become a member you need to contact Marvin Fitzgerald, Director of the Legion Riders at 252-339-5132. Planned activities for the fall are:

We provided 1200 plates in the spring. Let’s hope we can do even more this time. The success is measured by your support.

Plans are being worked out for Post 40 to host a Political Candidates Night on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. It will be open to the public. All local and state candidates will be invited to attend. News releases will be issued to better inform everyone of this event.
