Post 40 News & Calendar
JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2010 NEWS LETTER
POST/UNIT REGULAR MEETINGS
January 5 and February 2 are the next regular scheduled
meetings of Post & Unit 40. Mark your calendar and plan to
attend your Post meeting. We will eat at 7:15 PM (only
$5.00) and meet at 8:00 PM. Dennis Robinson will be our
guest speaker at the January meeting and his subject will be
recycling. This is something we all need to be involved in.
Invite eligible veterans to be your guest. We won’t tell
them you didn’t have to pay for their meal.
POST 40 FAMILY CHRISTMAS DINNER
Hopefully you will receive this before December 17, and
then you can’t say we didn’t notify you, even though it was
in the last newsletter, of this fun time as the Post 40
Family celebrates Christmas. We will gather at 6:30 PM and
eat at 7:00 PM. Bring a covered dish. Post 40 will be
providing the meat and rolls. Our special North Pole guests
will be arriving around 8 PM. All members, their immediate
family and eligible veterans and their families are most
welcomed to enjoy Christmas with our families.
MEMBERSHIP
There are still over 140 2009 members who have not
renewed their membership for 2010. You know who you are.
Post 40 and The American Legion organization cares about you
and stands ready to assist, stand up for, lead the way and
take the hits for you. This is a critical time for all
veterans. Federal and state officials are looking at every
funding expense and every income avenue to find ways to cut
and tax. Proposals for added fees for Tri Care and VA visits
and medicines keep popping up. If you keep throwing mud at
the wall long enough some is going to stick and that’s
likely to happen to us veterans, they are going to stick it
to us. Those of us who enjoy the Senior Citizen status get
no Social Security increase for the next two years yet the
Medicare deduction goes up. Guest who are getting automatic
increase unless they vote not to except? How does this rant
relate to membership? The American Legion at the National
level has a staff in Washington that are very good at
knowing what’s happening that will or could effect us
veterans, our widows and children. At the Department level
there are great volunteers who are watch dogs of our
branches of State government. All of this takes money to
staff and to keep us informed through the Legion Magazine,
our newspaper and this newsletter. You are important. Your
organization is important for all veterans and what’s good
for veterans is good for American.
Please send your check today for $30.00 to Post 40, P.O. Box
390, Edenton, NC 27932.
NEW YEARS EVE CELEBRATION
Thursday, December 31 from 8 PM until 1 AM there will be
a party going on at Post 40. There will be appetizers,
setups, a continental breakfast and of course there will be
black eyed peas properly seasoned. DJ Ernie Muro will be
providing the music for your dancing and listening pleasure.
Ernie might even do a little singing. Some say he is pretty
good and I agree. Seating is limited so you are encouraged
to get your tickets early. Call your friends and bring a
group. The price is only $15.00 per person (BYOB). You can
call the Post at 482-4057 to reserve tickets. You are asked
to pay for your reserved tickets by Monday, December 28.
Come on out and let’s have some fun and welcome in 2010 in
grand style.
DEPARTMENT MID-WINTER CONFERENCE
The Department (state) Mid-Winter Conference will be
February 19 & 20, 2010. All Legionnaires are welcome and
encouraged to attend. It will be at the North Raleigh
Hilton, 3415 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC. To make
reservations you need to call 1-800-445-8667 and make sure
to tell them you are attending The American Legion
conference. The rate should be $85.00/night plus taxes. This
is an excellent opportunity to learn more about The American
Legion and meet and make new friends.
LEGION RIDERS
Post 40 has established a new American Legion Riders
Club. If you have a bike and want to become a member you
need to contact Director Marvin Fitzgerald at 252-426-8470
or
fritz1993@embarqmail.com. Charter membership status is
opened thru November 30, 2010. To learn more about the
Legion Riders go to
www.legion.org and go to the Legion Rider page, or go
directly to the NC Chapter of the Legion Riders at
www.ncalr.org.
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Post 40 has joined forces with the Chowan-Edenton
Optimist Club to sponsor a “Welcome Home / Thank You All
Veterans Parade” on Monday, May 31, 2010. This will be a
huge effort requiring all possible volunteers. The planning
committee is meeting monthly at this point. The next meeting
is Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 7 PM at the Post (back
bldg.). If you are interested and have ideas please plan to
attend. Start now letting all your family and friends know
that we want every possible veteran to be in the parade. The
plan is to have the parade divided into four sections, WWII,
Korea War, Vietnam War and the War on Terrorism. Inform your
church and other civic organizations of this opportunity to
say “Thank You” by participating in the parade with floats
and attendance. The Memorial Day Service, still in the
planning stages, may be moved to the Edenton Waterfront
Park. The Grand Marshall (TBA) will be the guest speaker for
the service.
HOG FEST in Historic Edenton
The 4th annual HOG FEST in Historic Edenton
will be Saturday, May 1, 2010. Plans are well under way to
provide a family fun atmosphere for all. The Kansas City BBQ
Society will again sanction the BBQ cook-offs. Continuing
events besides the cook-offs will be the Kids Pedal Tractor
& Tricycle Drag Races, the Kids Obstacle Course sponsored by
the JAH JROTC and musical entertainment. The 2nd
annual Motorcycle Ride-in & Show should be even bigger and
better. Two new highlights will be a Car Show and the 1st
ever NC Cornhole Championship Tournament. If you or some one
you know wants to enter a team in the cook-offs now is the
time to start making plans. Applications will be ready by
January.
A D & D POLICY
The Department and Legionnaire’s Insurance Trust (LIT)
provide you with the opportunity to have $1,000 of
accidental death & dismemberment (A D & D) insurance at “no
cost”. The only requirements are you must be a Legionnaire
in good standing and complete the enrollment activation. The
present coverage runs through August 31, 2016, a full seven
years if you are enrolled. Call LIT Customer Service Center
toll free and check your status at 1-800-235-6943. This
is your responsibility and no one can do it for you.
You must have your 2010 membership dues paid to have
coverage.
MEMBERSHIP & THE BY-LAWS
North Carolina American Legion Constitution and By-laws,
article IV, section 5 reads, “A member whose dues for the
current year have not been paid by January 1 shall be
classed as delinquent. If dues are paid before February 1,
reinstatement shall be automatic. If still delinquent after
February 1, all privileges shall be suspended”.
This is for Legion, Auxiliary, SAL and Legion Riders
members. Post 40 has an established policy that only current
members, ones with a 2010 membership card, can enjoy
Clubroom privileges as of January1.
VA – GLASSES & HEARING AIDS
A new directive allows the VA to provide glasses and
hearing aids to those who are not service connected for
those conditions (Priority Groups 6 – 8). These are now
considered part of the preventive care package for all
veterans enrolled in the VA, who meet certain criteria. You
can go to
http://www1.va.gov/vhpublication.asp?pub_ID=1789 for
more information.
OYSTER ROAST
The 2nd annual Oyster Roast sponsored by
Squadron 40 of the Sons of The American Legion will be
Thursday, February 11 from 6 to 8 PM. Tickets will be $30.00
per person and this includes everything but your shucking
knife, glove and bib. Make your plans now to attend. Tickets
will be limited to 200 and sales will be cut off at that
number. If you snooze you just might loose out on a great
evening.
DD214 ACCESSIBILITY
Need a copy of your DD214, go to
HTTP://vetrecs.archives.gov. Once you have obtained a
copy or if you already have it, please provide a copy to
Post 40 to satisfy IRS requirements. As a non-profit
organization, if audited we must be able to prove our
members are veterans.
HONOR WALL
Just because the current boards are full is not a reason
for you to provide a picture. As soon as there are enough
pictures to justify another board will be put in place. Drop
your picture by the Post or mail it in and it will be copied
and returned to you.
It is really amazing to watch people search the Honor Wall
looking for family members and friends and then when they
find someone they know the smiles and memories they share.
MEMORIAL BRICKS
There are still a few spots in the current plots for
Memorial Bricks at the Chowan County Veterans Memorial. Once
these are filled a new area will be opened. If you need an
application you can go on the Chowan County web site and
down load and mail to Post 40 with your $50.00 fee. You will
be notified when your brick is ready to be put in place.
BINGO & COOK COMMITTEES
HELP!!!!!! Both committees need help. Bingo plays every
Monday. Volunteers need to be at the Post at 6 PM. Training
is free and the pay is the satisfaction of helping your Post
and making friends with the other volunteers and players.
Come on out.
